Software to use(free): Calibre
Steps:
1) Import your .doc,.html or .pdf (other formats available) ebook into Calibre by: Add Books -> Clicking on book
2) Convert to EPUB : Right Click -> Convert Books -> Convert Individually
3) Fill metadata information (can be edited later), cover photo and click OK
4) Open by double clicking and check if there are any formatting errors.
5) To edit or format: Right click -> Edit Book
6) Edit it as you would edit HTML of a website. Save constantly
7) Add table of contents (optional) - Tools -> Table of Contents
7) Run step 2 again for other formats such as MOBI(Kindle)
